Threads, woven between us.
After we matched online…
You took a hiatus,
and I gave you space.
For an entire week.
There was beauty in acceptance and letting go.
Then one day…
You broke the silence with a question I never saw coming.
“Would you ever want to go to Iran and buy a Persian rug?”
Not,
“How’s your day?”
Not,
“How’s work?”
You asked about a rug.
I was touched. I smiled.
And answered in a flirty way,
“Only if you go with me.” 😉
Little did I know…
That conversation wasn’t really about a rug.
It was about finding someone who saw beauty in the same unexpected things I did.
Months later…
After dating long-distance and you moved in,
We found our first hand-knotted rug together.
Not in Iran, though.
Just on Facebook Marketplace.
A whopping seventy-five dollars.
We felt like we won the rug lottery with that beautiful gem.
Then, later…
I chose another rug.
Not for the living room.
For our wedding.
The rug we would stand on while promising forever.
Looking back…
I think rugs have quietly followed us through our entire story.
In this lifetime,
And maybe in a few past lives as well.
I look at the rugs I had before I met you,
and now the once we have collected together,
and it reminds me that a home isn’t built all at once.
It’s woven together.
One thread.
One memory.
One adventure.
One beautiful “yes, and only if you go with me” at a time.
