19 Years from now.
As you know, I’ve missed the last two total solar eclipses.
Just ever so slightly outside the totality path for the one in 2017.
At the time, I felt it was too hard to travel with two young kids.
And the one in 2024 snuck up on me,
only for me to ironically end up in the totality path a week later, after the event.
Wild.
I just missed.
The next one won’t come until August 2045.
Nearly nineteen years from now at the time of this writing.
By then, we’ll be older. Hopefully still full of life and spunk.
But on that day, somewhere along the path of totality, I hope we’ll stand together, hold hands,
and watch daylight disappear.
For a few minutes, I get to witness a rare, grand celestial event.
I can’t imagine witnessing something so beautiful without you by my side.
When I think back to the eclipses I previously missed, I now understand.
In retrospect, the Universe was like… not yet sweetie...
I got something better for you—and I promise it will be worth the wait.
Maybe we’ll travel for it the eclipse of 2045.
The entire state of Florida will be in the totality path, so who knows… maybe we will be retired and living on the beach then.
(Do they make spaceship houses along the coast?… something to consider.)
Or maybe we will seek a field with views of rolling hills.
But I am sure, regardless, we’ll make an entire adventure out of finding the perfect place to watch.
Maybe we can bring a rug to sit on to make it feel more us.
And then,
we will we’ll sit beneath that darkened sky holding hands,
both of us aware of how many years had to pass to bring us there.
And we will both feel it in our hearts,
and shed a silent tear,
basking in the beauty of it all.
Not just at the sun,
but also in admiration of all that came before that moment.
Nineteen years sounds like a long time.
But I’ve already waited most of my life to find you.
Waiting a little longer to watch the sun disappear
behind the moon
with my Starman beside me
feels entirely worth it.
And when the light returns, I hope I’ll look over at you
and think the same thing I do now:
Some things are so entirely worth waiting for. ❤️
